At the top of the CADdetails homepage, there is a navigation tab that contains five tabs, one of which is the BIM models tab. Click on the BIM models tab, search for the SketchUp model of your desire and click on the model to download. However, like most sites on this list, you need to sign up and log in to be able to download free SketchUp models. CGTrader is a site I like to refer to as a reservoir of 3D models. For your hobbyist use you can still use SketchUp Make and get components from the 3D Warehouse through the Components panel or as you described, you can access the 3D Warehouse through your browser and get the Collada files to import. Well I guess the only other work-around apart from converting to a Windows machine or upgrading your SketchUp is, as already mentioned:. Use your regular internet browser and download the model you want but be sure to download in the Collada file format, save it to your machine where you will find it easily.

Alternatively you can simply look up Sketchup 3D Warehouse online and browse through thousands of models. The 3D Warehouse is just no longer converting components to older versions. For a number of years it has only supported the last three versions. They did delay removing support for SU for a year. Your choice. I see a lot of improvements that have improved my workflow and made it much more efficient. The only thing of real value is the compressed file size, otherwise, nothing. Layout is still terrible.
